Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
The media’s role in exposing scandals involving public officials is central to promoting transparency, accountability, and good governance. However, reporting such scandals often presents ethical dilemmas, including balancing the public’s right to know with considerations of privacy, accuracy, and fairness. In Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State, cases of alleged misconduct by public officials have underscored the challenges journalists face in navigating these ethical complexities (Abdullahi & Yusuf, 2024). Sensationalism, political pressures, and the potential for defamation lawsuits further complicate the landscape of investigative reporting (Ahmed, 2023). Ethical journalism requires adherence to principles of truth, fairness, and responsibility, yet these ideals are often tested when reporting on high-stakes issues involving influential individuals. This study examines the ethical dilemmas encountered in reporting scandals involving public officials in Jos South, offering insights into how journalists can navigate these challenges while upholding professional standards.
